Louisiana Tech University’s Athletic Transition
In a perplexing twist in collegiate athletics, Louisiana Tech University’s football team finds itself slated on the schedules for both the Sun Belt Conference and Conference USA as it navigates a contentious exit from the latter. Last July, the Sun Belt welcomed Louisiana Tech into its fold, a decision that the university embraced largely due to the prospect of competing against local rivals like Louisiana-Lafayette and Louisiana-Monroe, in addition to other Gulf South institutions such as Southern Miss and South Alabama. Recently, Louisiana Tech unveiled its 2026 football schedule, which includes matchups with these anticipated rivals.
Conflicting Schedules and Rivalries
Simultaneously, Conference USA also issued its schedule for the upcoming season, incorporating contests featuring Louisiana Tech against conference opponents such as Middle Tennessee, Florida International, Missouri State, Liberty, Kennesaw State, and Jacksonville State. Although Louisiana Tech communicated its intention to transition to the Sun Belt no later than July 1, 2027, there is a clear preference from the institution to join the new conference for the 2026-27 academic year, rich with in-state rivalries and strategic benefits.
Legal Proceedings and Financial Negotiations
However, negotiations between Louisiana Tech and Conference USA regarding a financial settlement for the exit have proven unsuccessful. To escalate the situation, last week, the University of Louisiana System, which governs Louisiana Tech, initiated legal proceedings aimed at compelling Conference USA to permit the school’s departure at the conclusion of the current academic year on June 30. The lawsuit accentuates Louisiana Tech’s assertion that despite its sincere attempts at an amicable resolution spanning over eight months, Conference USA has failed to engage constructively.
“The league has included Louisiana Tech in its 2026-27 sports calendar, ignoring the university’s reiterated intentions to disengage as of July 1, 2026.”
Louisiana Tech has been affiliated with Conference USA since 2014, making this current scenario particularly notable.
