Alex Eala defeats Wang Xinyu in Italian Open Round of 64, evening their rivalry

Alex Eala Triumphs at the Italian Open

In an impressive display of skill and determination, Alex Eala triumphed over Wang Xinyu with a score of 6-4, 6-3 during the Round of 64 at the Italian Open on Friday night. This victory not only marked Eala’s maiden consecutive wins on clay courts this season, but it also evened the score in their head-to-head encounters, following Wang’s earlier victory over the Filipino player in a three-set semifinal at the ASB Classic earlier this year.

Match Overview

Eala faced an uphill battle right from the start, as Wang raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set after breaking Eala’s serve twice. However, Eala quickly found her rhythm, taking control of the baseline rallies and responding with a streak of four straight games, which included two crucial breaks of serve. This shift in momentum proved pivotal, allowing Eala to snatch the first set from Wang, who struggled with her serve and committed four double faults during the set.

Although Wang managed a first-serve percentage of 70% compared to Eala’s 64%, Eala capitalized on her return game, winning 52% of points on Wang’s first serve, in contrast to Wang’s 38% on Eala’s first serve.

Second Set Dynamics

The second set commenced with both competitors exchanging holds, staying level through the initial four games. However, Wang momentarily regained the lead by breaking Eala’s serve in the fifth game. Yet, this lead was short-lived; Eala responded with renewed vigor, stringing together four consecutive games to establish her supremacy in the match.

Just when it seemed Wang might have the upper hand, Eala showcased her resilience, breaking back in the sixth game and again in the eighth to bring her within a game of winning. While serving for the match in the ninth game, Eala encountered a stern challenge from Wang, who engaged her in lengthy rallies. Nevertheless, Eala remained composed and focused, successfully navigating the pressure to clinch the straight-sets victory.

Eala’s performance on her second serve was noteworthy, as she recorded a winning percentage of 48%, significantly higher than Wang’s 35%.

Looking Ahead

Looking forward, Eala is poised to meet a formidable opponent in the Round of 32, with either world number two Elena Rybakina or Greece’s Maria Sakkari likely to be her next challenge.
