Alex Barre-Boulet Signs with Colorado Avalanche
Alex Barre-Boulet, born in Montmagny, PQ, recently signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Colorado Avalanche. This contract will pay him $775,000 if he stays in the NHL, or $475,000 if he ends up in the minors.
Previous Stint with Montreal Canadiens
This decision comes after a brief stint with the Montreal Canadiens, where he had signed a one-year, one-way deal prior to the 2024 season. The 28-year-old center has played 68 games in the NHL and was part of the Canadiens’ opening night roster. However, after failing to score in his first two games, he was placed on waivers and subsequently assigned to the Laval Rocket after going unclaimed.
Performance with Laval Rocket
During his time with Laval, Barre-Boulet notably excelled, leading the team with 63 points in 64 games, outpacing teammate Laurent Dauphin by seven points and significantly outscoring Jared Davidson. He finished with 22 goals, placing him fourth on the team, trailing behind Dauphin’s impressive total of 26.
Despite his outstanding performance, Barre-Boulet was not recalled to the Canadiens, who appeared more focused on developing their younger prospects. This strategy was evident as several young players, including Owen Beck, Joshua Roy, and Oliver Kapanen, were given opportunities to showcase their skills.
Impact of the Transition
Veteran players like Lucas Condotta and Rafael Harvey-Pinard had limited appearances, further indicating the organization’s preference for youth over experience. The decision to part ways with Barre-Boulet was a predictable outcome based on this trajectory. As he transitions to the Avalanche, the Laval Rocket will certainly feel the impact of losing their top scorer.
Nevertheless, this presents an opportunity for players like Beck and Kapanen to assume larger roles, which can ultimately enhance their development.
Looking Ahead
Fans of Barre-Boulet are hopeful he finds success in Colorado and earns more playtime at the NHL level.
