Ajax Appoints John Heitinga as New Manager Following Farioli’s Departure

Ajax Appoints John Heitinga as Head Coach

Ajax has officially announced the appointment of John Heitinga as their new head coach, taking over from Francesco Farioli, who departed following a disappointing end to the Eredivisie season. Ajax witnessed a significant drop in form, surrendering a nine-point advantage to PSV Eindhoven with only five matches left to play, leading to Farioli’s exit.

Heitinga’s Background and Experience

Heitinga, a former player for Ajax with 154 league appearances, is familiar with the club, having also served as interim manager for six months in 2023, where he steered the team to a respectable third-place finish in the league. The Dutchman returns to Ajax after gaining coaching experience in England, where he worked as an assistant under David Moyes at West Ham United and alongside Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. His tenure in the Premier League concluded with a league title, adding to his credentials as he takes on this new challenge.

Heitinga’s Reflections

Reflecting on his new position, Heitinga expressed his enthusiasm: “I am incredibly excited to start. The last years in England have done me a lot of good, and I’ve been able to develop further alongside great coaches while observing two major clubs from a close perspective. I’m honored to be given the opportunity to lead Ajax.”

A Rich Career and Ambitions

Having enjoyed a successful playing career, during which he claimed two Eredivisie titles with Ajax, Heitinga also represented clubs in Spain (Atlético Madrid), Germany (Hertha Berlin), and England (Everton and Fulham). His national team experience includes 87 caps and a World Cup runner-up finish in 2010. After retiring in 2016, he launched his coaching career within Ajax’s youth academy.

Club Expectations

Ajax’s technical director, Alex Kroes, praised Heitinga’s coaching abilities, noting his ambition and growth over the last few years in top-flight English football. Kroes mentioned, “We first spoke with John last year and have kept in touch since.” As a club recognized for its rich history, Ajax boasts 36 Eredivisie titles, yet they have not secured the championship since 2022, heightening the expectations for Heitinga’s tenure.
