Aitana Bonmati hospitalized with viral meningitis just before Women’s Euros

Aitana Bonmati Hospitalized Before Women’s Euro 2025

Aitana Bonmati, the two-time reigning Ballon d’Or champion, has been admitted to the hospital due to viral meningitis, creating uncertainty just days before Spain’s kickoff in the Women’s Euro 2025 tournament. Montse Tome, head coach of the Spanish national team, confirmed the news following Spain’s recent friendly match against Japan, which they won 3-1. The game served as a preparation for their upcoming Group B opener against Portugal on July 3.

Bonmati’s Condition and Team Impact

The 27-year-old midfielder took to Instagram to share a photo of herself watching the match from her hospital bed, along with a message assuring her fans that the situation is under control. Coach Tome addressed the seriousness of meningitis but reassured the public that Bonmati’s condition is being effectively managed.

“Aitana will remain hospitalized, and we currently do not have a timeline for her return,”

Tome stated during the press briefing after the victory in Leganes.

Bonmati’s Achievements and Team Dynamics

Bonmati’s impressive track record includes scoring 30 goals in 78 caps for Spain and playing a pivotal role in their triumph at the Women’s World Cup in 2023 as well as the Women’s Nations League last year. Recognized not only for her talents on the field but also as the FIFA Women’s Player of the Year for both 2023 and 2024, her absence is felt deeply within the team.

“Aitana holds a significant place in our squad, and we will be patient in hoping for her recovery,”

added Tome. Spain, who are also set to compete against Belgium and Italy in their group, has yet to claim a title at the continental championship, having only reached the semi-finals once, in 1997. The team is preparing to make a strong impression in their upcoming campaign, albeit without one of their star players for an undetermined period.
