Introduction to “On the Edge: World Cup Ski Racing”

As the Winter Olympics in Milan Cortina approach, elite ski racers, including Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn, will be featured in a compelling new docuseries that offers viewers an intimate look at the world of competitive skiing. The five-part series, titled “On the Edge: World Cup Ski Racing,” produced by ESPN, debuts this Friday and showcases the lives and challenges faced by some of the sport’s most recognized athletes.

Featured Athletes and Insights

In addition to Shiffrin and Vonn, the series highlights talented competitors like Swiss skier Marco Odermatt and Brazil’s Lucas Pinheiro Braathen, a Norwegian descendent known for his engaging personality. The series promises to provide insights into the personal experiences of these athletes as they prepare for the Olympic Games, scheduled for February 6-22.

Final Episode and Special Focus

The final episode, set to air on April 10, will center around Swiss skier Camille Rast, who reflects on a tragic bar fire that occurred during a New Year’s celebration in Crans-Montana. This segment will also revisit how Vonn, who has made a comeback after undergoing partial knee replacement surgery, and other competitors fared during their Olympic journeys.

Importance of Storytelling in Ski Racing

Sophie Goldschmidt, the president and CEO of U.S. Ski & Snowboard, expressed the importance of this storytelling approach, emphasizing that it enhances the sport’s visibility and inspires the next generation of athletes. “On the Edge” aims to connect with young viewers, encouraging them to pursue their dreams of ski racing akin to icons like Shiffrin and Vonn.

Director’s Vision and Athlete Journeys

Directed by filmmaker Pat Dimon, the docuseries aims to narrate the athletes’ journeys toward Olympic success while revealing the hard work and sacrifices involved in a competitive skiing career. Among the featured athletes are New Zealand’s Alice Robinson and Italy’s Sofia Goggia, Federica Brignone, and Dominik Paris, as well as Norway’s Henrik Kristoffersen.

Behind the Scenes of Competitive Skiing

With a background as a dedicated skier from Vermont, Dimon highlights that true stories often unfold outside of the competition. He notes that “On the Edge” seeks to dive deeper than the external glamour of racing, showcasing the physical demands, mental resilience, and the realities of life on the World Cup circuit.

The series will be available on the ESPN app and ESPN through Disney+.
