In an exciting announcement for basketball fans, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver revealed that a groundbreaking European basketball league, developed in collaboration with FIBA, may launch as early as 2027 or 2028. “I don’t think I’d want to go much longer than ’28. The opportunity is now to do something like this.”

Global Impact and Player Representation
The growing presence of European players in the NBA further substantiates this league’s potential. Notably, approximately 16% of current NBA players hail from Europe, including stars like Nikola Jokic from Serbia and Giannis Antetokounmpo from Greece, who have dominated recent MVP voting. Luka Doncic from Slovenia and Victor Wembanyama from France are also significant figures in the league.
Silver emphasized basketball’s rapid global growth, asserting,
“Basketball’s probably the fastest-growing sport in the world right now, and it’s a huge No. 2 sport in Europe behind soccer, so I think there’s a real opportunity.”
