Achraf Hakimi Named African Footballer of the Year
Achraf Hakimi, the talented defender from Paris Saint-Germain, was honored with the title of African Footballer of the Year during a prestigious ceremony held in Rabat on Wednesday. The Moroccan national received the highest number of votes, surpassing notable contenders such as Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah of Liverpool and Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen, who plays for Galatasaray, rounding out the top three contenders.
Acceptance Speech Highlights
In his acceptance speech, Hakimi expressed immense pride in receiving such a commendable recognition.
“This is not merely an individual triumph for me, but rather a celebration for everyone in Africa striving to achieve their football dreams. I owe a debt of gratitude to those who have always believed in my potential since childhood,”
he remarked.
Remarkable Season with PSG
Hakimi enjoyed a remarkable season with PSG, contributing to the team’s success by collecting five trophies, including the club’s first UEFA Champions League title, which he celebrated by scoring during the final match against Inter Milan, ending in a resounding 5-0 victory in May. He acknowledged the support of his family, teammates, and those who assist him daily in his career, stating,
“Your unwavering support strengthens my resolve and fosters my development.”
A Historic Achievement
The award was presented to him by FIFA President Gianni Infantino alongside CAF President Patrice Motsepe, marking a significant achievement for a defender, a category that has not seen such recognition since 1973 when Zaire’s Bwanga Tshimen claimed the same honor.

Additionally, the event witnessed Ghizlane Chebbak making history as the first Moroccan woman to earn the African Footballer of the Year accolade, topping the list ahead of compatriot Sanaa Mssoudy and Nigeria’s Rasheedat Ajibade.
