AC Milan vs. Como: A Historic Match in Australia
In a groundbreaking move for European football, AC Milan is set to play against Como in Perth, Australia, marking the potential first occasion that a major European league match will take place outside its home nation. This decision comes after Italy’s football governing body, the FIGC, announced their approval for the match to be relocated from Milan due to the unavailability of the famed San Siro Stadium.
Logistical Changes Due to the Winter Olympics
On February 6, the San Siro will host the opening ceremony for the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics—hence the need for a venue change. While the venue shift is primarily motivated by logistical needs associated with the Olympics, it still signifies a significant milestone in the sport, as previous attempts to host domestic league games abroad had been consistently rejected.
“The Federal Council has expressed positive feedback regarding the Lega Serie A’s proposal to hold the Milan-Como match in Perth,” stated the FIGC in an official release.
They recognized the event as a momentous opportunity for Serie A to venture outside Italy’s borders. Despite this green light, the FIGC did warn that there are intricate approval processes still needed before the game can commence. This step involves obtaining formal consent from several governing bodies, including Football Australia, UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation, and FIFA, which will ultimately determine if this historic match can proceed in Australia.
