Tribute to Diogo Jota
In a heartfelt homage to the late Diogo Jota, artist John Culshaw has unveiled a striking mural near Anfield. This artwork stands as a touching tribute in memory of Jota, who tragically lost his life in a car accident in Zamora, Spain, alongside his brother, André Silva.
Mural Description
The mural captures a celebratory moment of Jota, depicted joyously with his hands forming a heart—a symbol of the love he shared with Liverpool fans. Culshaw, expressing the sentiment that Liverpool supporters have a deep capacity to honor those who have significantly impacted their lives, remarked:
“As Liverpool fans we know how to deal with tragedy and show our appreciation to someone who has given us so much.”
He elaborated on his artistic choice, stating that the image conveys Jota’s spirit celebrating with the fans, and through this mural, the community reciprocates that love.
Legacy and Jersey Retirement
In a show of respect for Jota’s legacy, Liverpool FC announced the retirement of the No. 20 jersey, which he wore, across all men’s and women’s teams. Culshaw added:
“Diogo has given us so many memories, it’s only right that he will remain our number 20 forever.”
This statement underlines the enduring nature of Jota’s impact on the club.
Upcoming Matches
The unveiling of the mural coincided with Liverpool’s first preseason match against Preston North End, which featured various tributes to the beloved player. Looking ahead, Liverpool is set to face AC Milan in a friendly match in Hong Kong on July 26.
