49ers Consortium, Led by Andrew Cavenegh, Acquires Rangers Football Club

Acquisition of Rangers Football Club

In a significant development for Scottish football, a consortium spearheaded by the ownership of the San Francisco 49ers and prominent healthcare magnate Andrew Cavenegh has successfully acquired a controlling interest in Rangers Football Club. This takeover, confirmed by the club on Friday, grants the new owners a 51% stake in the storied team, which has a rich history that includes 55 league championships in Scotland.

Vision and Investment

With a vision focused on revitalizing the club’s on-field performance and ensuring long-term financial health, Rangers announced that the consortium has already invested £20 million (approximately $27 million) into the club. As the new chairman, Cavenegh stated their primary objectives:

“Our focus is simple: elevate performance, deliver results, and bring Rangers back to where it belongs — at the top.”

He emphasized the importance of results over tradition, alluding to the pressing challenges the club faces.

Experience in Football

The 49ers’ investment arm, 49ers Enterprises, is no stranger to football in the UK, as they also own Leeds United, who recently achieved promotion to the English Premier League after clinching the Championship title this season. Paraag Marathe, president of 49ers Enterprises, will serve as the vice chairman of Rangers under Cavenegh’s leadership.

Current Challenges

Rangers’ recent struggles have been notable, as their last championship victory came in 2021. This season’s competitive landscape saw their archrivals Celtic matching their record of 55 titles and dominating Scottish football with 13 league wins in the last 14 seasons. The new management aims to shift the narrative and restore Rangers’ former glory in Scottish football.
