NBA Offseason Overview
With August approaching, most of the major transactions of the 2025 NBA offseason have been completed. Over the past month, teams have finalized deals totaling more than $8.2 billion, reshaping rosters through the draft, free agency, and trades. As coaches and players wrap up their offseason business, many are gearing up to leave the hustle behind and enjoy the summer.
Remaining Free Agents
However, the work isn’t entirely finished. Various situations still require attention, particularly regarding the remaining unrestricted free agents. Last week highlighted several notable players in this category, including seasoned veterans like Russell Westbrook and Ben Simmons. While some lesser-known players may look to continue their careers abroad—such as former Pacers center Thomas Bryant nearing a deal in Greece—others are clinging to the hope of achieving a spot on an NBA roster. It wouldn’t be surprising if some familiar names miss out entirely as teams finalize their rosters.
Restricted Free Agents
Also on the to-do list is the status of restricted free agents (RFAs) like Jonathan Kuminga, Josh Giddey, Quentin Grimes, and Cam Thomas. Much attention has focused on their negotiations, yet little progress appears to have been made:
- Kuminga has been resistant to agreeing to the Warriors’ two-year, $40 million offer, while prospective sign-and-trade options, particularly from the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings, are stalling.
- Meanwhile, Giddey’s negotiations with the Bulls are stuck, with a reported difference of $8 million to $10 million in average annual value.
- Thomas is in a similar bind with the Nets, aiming for a new deal starting north of $30 million, but the Nets have only made an offer at the mid-level exception.
- For Grimes and the 76ers, an agreement seems likely but is expected to be a short-term deal that may take time to finalize.
Veteran Extensions
Looking towards veteran extensions, several players have already signed lucrative multi-year deals this offseason, including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Kyrie Irving, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Devin Booker. Luka Dončić, the centerpiece of one of last season’s most significant transactions, will become eligible for a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers on August 2. Dončić faces a choice that could see him extend his current deal or enter unrestricted free agency after next season. But indicators suggest he may be inclined to stay, especially following his role in recruiting newcomer Marcus Smart and being informed of the Lakers’ imminent ownership changes.
In a potential extension worth $160 million over three years, Dončić could position himself for a massive contract upon reaching ten years of service in the league. This contract could total nearly $370 million across seven years, offering a significant financial incentive.
Other veterans who might sign extensions include Kevin Durant, following his notable trade to the Houston Rockets, where he is eyeing a two-year, $120 million deal, and Trae Young, who is expected to negotiate a contract that balances his contributions with the Hawks’ future roster flexibility. The Knicks may look to secure extensions for Mikal Bridges and Karl-Anthony Towns, both vital players from their recent success. Meanwhile, De’Aaron Fox could be looking at a hefty four-year extension worth up to $222 million after his trade to the Spurs, though the acquisition of top draft prospect Dylan Harper may complicate matters.
Young Players and International Play
Additionally, several young players from the 2022 draft class remain extension eligible. While top picks like Paolo Banchero quickly secured deals, others may face prolonged negotiations into training camp. Potential candidates include Keegan Murray of the Kings, Jaden Ivey from the Pistons, and Christian Braun of the Nuggets, each presenting unique conversations about their value and team needs moving forward.
As for international play, the upcoming EuroBasket tournament kicks off on August 27, with 24 nations vying for medals. Stars like Nikola Jokić, Luka Dončić, and Giannis Antetokounmpo will represent their countries, while many other NBA players are on preliminary rosters, although final decisions concerning participation will take shape closer to the tournament’s start.
LeBron James and Future Speculations
On the front of LeBron James, after confirming he will be with the Lakers next season by opting into his $52.6 million contract, he has been sighted engaging in leisurely activities with influential figures in basketball. Speculation surrounds his intentions as he spends time with those linked to potential developments in the basketball landscape, indicating he may keep fans intrigued during the summer months before the season resumes.
